STORIES

Ten years ago, I started a software company that was virtual. We started the company by getting together to define the vision, which I believe was from the heart. Afterwards, everyone worked from home. As founder, I intended to solve our customers' problems. One cofounder thrived on creating cool programs and loved creating the application. The other cofounder was a finance guy who also loved what he was doing. We connected frequently via the phone, but I felt we lost our energy and sense of direction/intention after a while, because we were not together physically. Eventually, the finance cofounder stopped participating. One day, the technical cofounder decided he no longer wanted to work from home, so he set out to find a "real" job. After 4 years, I closed down the company. I felt that we failed, because we were unable to keep our passion going without interacting in a physical setting.

Andy worked for a large company and really loved his work. He was well respected by the president. Still, Andy spent time after work creating a software application with a friend. This went on for about 10 years. One day, Andy decided he wanted a change from his routine, so he resigned. The president tried to get him to stay, but he declined. Andy began working as a contract consultant and continued to work on his software application. After a while, his work contract ended, and he decided to focus more time on his software application, but he kept going in circles. Today, he is still working on his idea while looking for a job, because he does not know how to proceed. I worked with Andy for a while, but he needed a place to go to daily to work with others, and the place did not exist. I suggested he go to events in Cambridge, but he felt it would impact his time with his wife and kids.

I love helping people solve problems they cannot solve. Often, they do not see a why to resolve their problems. This has always been true with my customers. By solving problems that they feel are unsolvable, I get a lot of appreciation from my customers. I love this! This was also true with my brother-in-law when diagnosed with cancer and given only months to live. As his advocate, I found research and clinical trials that were able to keep him alive for more than 5 years. During that time, he lived his life with a passion that included biking daily and completing a 100 mile ride, which had always been his goal.
