The Present
I was born in a poor family in Chile. My dad was happy with an 8 to 6 job, even if it didn’t pay much, as long as he could have dinner in front of the TV. He was proud of the fact he never was late to work, that’s why he never considered I had a “real job” as an engineer because I was allowed to get in until noon, it didn’t matter that I was working 100 hours per week.
My mom was the complete opposite, she was always thinking in new ways to start businesses. In a small economy, without a high school diploma, this is very tough. She started selling office supplies to friends, then she opened a store in the house (never got a permit from the town), then a store in a shopping center. She went through 5 different shops without being able to make enough money to sustain the family. I was in college when she was trying the 6th time, I was able to give her advice and get the capital from a relative. This business was so successful, that she had to hire my father.
My life has been marked by the deep contrast between my parents, I don’t think I know another person who has done so much with so little than my mom.
My people have scarce resources
My people are driven by unstoppable forces
My people can do a lot with very little
My people will value any help
I can count on my people to do their part
Last year I attended Startup Bootcamp at MIT. The presentation that had the biggest impact on me was from Daniel Theobald, founder of Vecna, the robot manufacturing company. I was impressed by 2 things, first, he was the only speaker who didn’t have an ego, and second, he cared so much about his business that he named it “eternal” (Czeck). He believed the only way to ensure his company would last was keeping control and avoid outside investment. He had to work for 10 years as a consultant before he could found Vecna.
I had heard some horror stories about VC's in the entrepreneur community and Daniel's advice ended up convincing me that this was the approach I should take. When I quit Bookpool I couldn’t find a job and decided it was a good opportunity to start my own company. I picked an idea that was simple to implement, started working and failed because I run out of money. The funny thing was that, even if I wanted, I wouldn't have been able to get funding because the idea was just too simple.
My invention is a mechanism to fund companies that promotes innovation
My invention empowers founders by keeping then in control of their company
